One dead in early morning apartment fire in Sioux Falls

7:00 a.m. Update

One man has died after a fire went through an apartment building in Sioux Falls early Tuesday morning. The fire started around 4:30 a.m. Crews that were first on the scene reported heavy smoke coming out of the back of the apartment on 1004 North Covell Ave. The apartment has 8 units in the building. The smoke was coming from one of the top floor apartments. Additional support crews arrived around 5:00 a.m. A man was pulled from the apartment. Crews were unable to revive him. We do not know at this time the cause of death. Everyone else in the building was able to get out safely. There are two buildings at the scene but only one had to be evacuated. Fire crews and evacuated residents are using a local Sioux Falls City bus in order to keep warm. The fire crews have been rotating in an out of the bus in order to prevent hypothermia. The Red Cross is on scene handing out bottles of water. The area around the apartment has been blocked off and will remain that way for another hour or so. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

We are covering breaking news this morning. A fire broke out on North Covell Ave. in Sioux Falls early Tuesday morning. Sioux Falls Fire and rescue crews are on scene. KSFY News Reporter Rachel Gabrielsen is on the scene and reports seeing smoke coming from the building. A Sioux Falls city bus has been brought to the apartment complex. It looks like residents are using it for shelter as crews work on the building. We will bring you the latest information as soon as it becomes available.
