Sioux Falls police release name of victim in fatal apartment fire
Police and fire marshals are working together to determine the cause of a fatal fire in Sioux Falls.
Heath Westphal, 26, of Sioux Falls died in connection with fire that broke out in the apartment building at 1004 North Covell Avenue Tuesday morning.
At 4:24, Police responded to a call of smoke in the hallway of the apartment building. Officer Sam Clemens said police were there three minutes before fire rescue crews arrived and assisted in the evacuation of the apartment.
Westphal was taken from the apartment and subsequently pronounced dead. Officer Sam Clemens said he did not have details on whether Westphal was pronounced dead at the scene or at the hospital.
Everyone else in the building was able to get out safely. There are two buildings at the scene but only one had to be evacuated. Fire crews and evacuated residents used a local Sioux Falls bus in order to keep warm. The fire crews rotated in an out of the bus in order to prevent hypothermia.
Officer Sam Clemens said arson investigators, fire marshals and the police department are all working together to investigate the cause of the fire.
As of Tuesday morning, Clemens said he was unsure as to whether the other residents were allowed to return to their apartments.
