Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce honors veterans

Posted: Updated:

It's a national day of remembrance of the men and women who serve in the armed forces.

On this Veterans Day, the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce sponsored several events to recognize their contributions.

There were several celebrations taking place today to remember the people who put their lives on the line to serve our country.

One was an awards program to honor Disabled American Veterans.

We spoke with one vet who says today is day which can bring mixed emotions.

Larry Folkerts, Disabled American Veterans, said "it used to stir up a lot of negative memories when I first got out of the service. now it's like a celebration-type thing for me. I really enjoy coming to it. I come to this every year."

Folkerts said Veterans Day is not just about remembering our history.

"It's a remembrance of past and present veterans. It's not just for the old veterans, it's for the young ones too. We've got a lot of young veterans out there that need to be remembered too," Folkerts said.

Whether you are a civilian or a vet, today is a day we give thanks to those who serve.

"Every time I see one, I say welcome back and I thank them very much for their service. They deserve just as much recognition as the old ones do," Folkerts said.

Folkerts also gave thanks to the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, it helped make today's celebrations possible.

"I thank every one of them. they put out a lot of effort to put this program on. Amy and all the rest of the chamber group has went out of their way to put this on," Folkerts said.

Folkerts is grateful for the recognition.

"I really ran into a lot of people here in Sioux Falls that are really for the veterans. they are really great. you couldn't ask for a better city than Sioux Falls to live in for veterans appreciation," Folkerts said.

While November 11th is the day we celebrate Veterans Day, since it falls on a Sunday this year, it will also be observed on Monday.

Some restaurants in our area are offering free items to vets today and tomorrow.
