Price Is Right fans beware: the actual retail price of a classic Thanksgiving dinner is 28 cents more than last year's average—mostly thanks to the turkey, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.
AFBF conducted its 27th annual informal price survey of classic items found at the table on Thanksgiving Day. The average price of this year's feast for 10 people is $49.48. The increase was mostly driven up due to the 66 cents rise for a 16-pound turkey.
AFBF used 155 volunteer shoppers who checked out prices at grocery stores in 35 states. Here's a price list Farm Bureau came up with for the most common items:
1-pound relish tray (carrots and celery)
Whipping cream, ½ pint
Cubed stuffing, 14 oz.
Sweet potatoes, 3 lbs.
Milk, 1 gallon whole
Fresh cranberries, 12 oz.
Green peas, 1 lb.
Pumpkin pie mix, 30-oz.
Pie shells (2)
John Anderson, AFBF Deputy Chief Economist, cited a slight increase in demand for turkey as the reason for the moderate price increase. However, luckily for procrastinators, Anderson said buying a turkey at the last minute could be worth the wait.
"Turkeys may still be featured in special sales and promotions close to Thanksgiving," Anderson explained. "Anyone with the patience to wait until the last minute to buy a turkey for Thanksgiving could be rewarded with an exceptional bargain," he said.
Here's AFBF's list of the average price of a Thanksgiving dinner since 1986:
