Late senator remembered at McGovern Conference

Posted: Updated:

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - Two former members of Congress say today's candidates are increasingly going after each other personally.

Former Congressmen Gil Gutknecht of Minnesota and Max Sandlin of Texas spoke Monday at the annual McGovern Conference at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell about the growing political divide.

Gutknecht says going after another candidate personally "muddies the water and it poisons the well from which we all drink."

Sandlin says it's OK to attack an opponent for their political position or their vote, but not in a personal way.

The two men also agree on the legacy George McGovern left behind. The former U.S. senator died last month at age 90.

Says Sandlin: "People knew very well where he stood. They knew where he was on the political spectrum."
