NSU Adds Six for Volleyball

Posted: Updated:

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State head volleyball coach Brent Aldridge has announced the addition of six players to the NSU squad on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA early signing perioid.  The group includes local standouts Amanda Tobin and Lauren McCafferty of Aberdeen Central High School and Rachel Rogers of Warner High School along with Ashtin McClemans (Watertown, S.D.), Mikaela Casey (Oxbow, N.D.) and Tori Biach (Bradenton, Fla.).  All six will enroll in classes at NSU and join the Wolves for fall camp next August.

Tobin and McCafferty have led the Golden Eagles to their third straight ESD championship in 2012, finishing the league schedule at 14-0 under head coach Dennis Northrup.  CHS is 19-2 on the season heading into this weekend's state tournament, their third straight appearance at the tournament.  CHS finished third in 2011 and fifth in 2010.

Tobin is a 5-foot-10 defensive specialist who has put up 140+ kills in each of the past two seasons and has 30 service aces, 140 digs and 17 blocks in 2012.  She was a 2011 All-ESD and All-State pick in golf last season, as well.

McCafferty is a 6-foot outside hitter coming off First Team All-ESD, All-State and All-State Tournament selections in 2011.  She was also named to the Aberdeen News All-Area squad.

Rogers entered the 2012 season as a 2-time All-Lake Region Conference and All-Class B State Tournament Team selection and has since led her Warner HS Monarchs to a 31-0 record and a berth in this weekend's state tournament.  The 6-foot-2 middle blocker has helped the Monarchs amass a 122-5 record over her four-year career and enters this weekend's play for a state title just 35 kills shy of 1,000 on her career.  WHS earned state champion honors in 2009 and was the Class B runner-up in 2010, but was ousted by the Jussy Tuscherer-led Northwestern High School Wildcats in the district finals last season.

McClemans is a 5-11 outside hitter from Watertown HS who is currently leading the Arrows with 215 kills and 46 blocks on the 2012 season.  The effort comes after she missed most of the 2011 season with a broken foot.  McClemans returned to the floor in time for district play that season.  She was also named Most Improved Player on her WHS squad in 2010, a season in which the Arrows placed fifth at the state tournament.  She also helped lead the Arrows to an Eastern South Dakota Conference championship in basketball in 2011.  McClemans is the granddaughter of NSU Hall of Famer Gerald Schlekeway, who played football and track and field at NSU from 1961-66.

Casey is a 2-time all-district and all-conference selection out of Kindred High School in Kindred, N.D.  The 5-foot-3 libero has notched 330+ digs in each of the past three seasons while helping the Vikings to three straight district championships in 2010 through 2012.  Her Kindred HS team has tallied more than 70 wins over the past three seasons and begin their state tournament run on Thursday in Minot.  Casey also helped the Vikings to a state championship on the golf course last spring, finishing eighth individually.  The Vikings were the state runner-ups in 2011, Casey's sophomore season.

Biach, a 6-foot middle blocker/outside hitter, has notched 731 kills, 547 digs, 86 service aces and 69 blocks over the past two seasons while leading her Saint Stephens Episcopal School Falcons to district titles in 2010 and 2012 and a fourth straight berth in the regional tournament this fall.  Biach is averaging 6.0 kills per set in this, her senior season and has been named to the First Team All-County team for the second straight year.  A 2011 Bradenton Herald All-Area selection, Biach is a candidate for the 2012 3A State Player of the Year.  She has been the Falcons' MVP each of the past two seasons.  On the club circuit, Biach helped her team win the 2011 Northeast National Qualifier and advance to the Junior National Championships.  Following her senior season, Biach will be playing for Tampa United Volleyball Club, one of the top clubs in the area.  Off the court, Biach holds the school record in the discus and is involved in a wide variety of extracurricular activities
