8-year-old girl dies from car accident in West Sioux Falls
An 8-year-old girl has died from a car accident that happened on the west of side of Sioux Falls Thursday night.
At about 7:40 pm officers were dispatched to 26th Street and Discovery Avenue for an injury accident. The accident actually occurred in the new library construction site on the northeast corner of this intersection.
Lieutenant Jerome Miller said an off-duty police officer witnessed the accident. Miller said a 2009 Toyota Camry was westbound on 26th Street. After it proceeded past Sertoma Avenue it veered off the roadway, driving through a chain link fence before it struck a gooseneck trailer in a construction site. Miller said the crash ended several hundred feet away from the road.
Miller said it was a medical condition that caused the woman to crash. He said both occupants were wearing seatbelts and air bags deployed. The girl was sitting in the back passenger seat of the car.
The driver, Michelle Lee, 46, of Sioux Falls, and her daughter were taken to Sanford Hospital. The mother was released from the hospital, but the daughter later died as a result of her injuries.
