MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - Authorities say a man was arrested for drunken driving after he ran a red light and almost hit a Mitchell police car.
Wayne Hjellum is charged with a second offense of DUI. It carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $2,000 fine. The 22-year-old Sioux Falls resident is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
The Mitchell Daily Republic reports Hjellum allegedly drove through a flashing red light at a Mitchell city intersection and forced a police car to swerve to avoid hitting him.
A police affidavit says the officer then stopped Hjellum and gave him a series of sobriety tests, and he didn't do well.
