Feeding SD still taking Thanksgiving donations

Posted: Updated:

As we are just days away from Thanksgiving, one South Dakota organization - with a mission to feed the hungry - is working hard to reach its Thanksgiving drive goal.

Feeding South Dakota did recently receive donations of more than $62,000 when Sen. George McGovern passed away, but clarified it will not be using that money for the Turkey Drive, this Thanksgiving.

That means, they still need our help with their 2nd Annual Turkey drive hoping to feed thousands of South Dakota families.

Right now, the organization has received about 1200 turkeys in Sioux Falls. It would like to reach 2,000 before Thanksgiving which means they are just 800 shy of their goal.

"We've been receiving a number of turkeys and generous donations but we aren't where we need to be. We're hopeful we will still make it. We know there's a need and we hope we can fulfill that need," Kerri DeGraff said.

Money donated in the late Senator's name will be used for the South Dakota Backpack Program to help hungry kids across the state, which was a cause close to McGovern's heart.

This was a request made by the McGovern family, last month.

There are a number of ways YOU can help from donating a turkey, the fixings or just $20 for Feeding SD to buy the meal. The organization would like to have donations in by Wednesday as the rush of families begin picking up their meals.
