Phone scam appears on caller ID as Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office

Sioux Falls police are warning people of fake phone calls claiming to be from the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office.

Officer Sam Clemens said someone is calling residents claiming to be from the sheriff's office. Clemens said the scammer's number actually appears on the caller ID as Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office. The scammer then tells the person who answers the phone that he or she has unpaid fines or tickets that need to be taken care of.

Clemens said the sheriff's office does not take payments for fines or tickets over the phone.
