Oldest living South Dakotan to turn 108

Posted: Updated:

Dorothy Antritter has a birthday this coming Sunday, the 25th, and she might be a hard person to pick out a gift for.

What do you buy somebody on their 108th birthday?

Dorothy is the oldest living person in South Dakota and KSFY News Reporter Matt Peterson sat down with her today to hear stories from her past and what she's like today...

"Now he wants to know how old I am!" Dorothy Antritter said.

Dorothy, nothing to be ashamed of.

Turning 108 is quite the milestone. You have truly seen a bit of history

"Oh, I can still hear the bells and whistles," Antritter said. "We couldn't figure out what it was…everybody was happy"

In addition to remembering the end of World War One, Dorothy stills recalls life as a young child.

"Well we had a swing, we had a hammock, and we had rabbits…"

Dorothy remembers voting for Herbert Hoover in the 1928 election, making $50 dollars a month working as a secretary, and traveling to 49 of the 50 states.

Bonnie Morgans moved across the street from Dorothy forty-five years ago, and sees her nearly every day.

Bonnie says Dorothy's contagious laugh and spirit is remarkable for a woman her age.

"Her memory is wonderful, she has a great sense of humor," Morgans said about Dorothy. "We tease her all the time and we tell jokes."

In addition to the many jokes and stories Dorothy told me, she also sang a song for me, but it was not free…Dorothy charged a quarter!

Dorothy was very close to her older sister, Ruby.  Ruby passed away last summer at the age of 108.
