Project Blue Light to honor current and fallen police officers

Posted: Updated:

Law enforcement officers currently serving and officers who have been killed in the line of duty will be honored Tuesday night, thanks to Project Blue Light.

A ceremony to honor officers is being held Tuesday night at 6:30 pm at the main north entrance of the Empire Mall. Sioux Falls Police Chief Doug Barthel is expected to speak about the importance of remembering those fallen officers and survivors left behind.  During the holiday season, there will be a Project Blue Light display and tree decorated with blue lights placed at the main north entrance of the Empire Mall.

The idea began in 1989 when Mrs. Dolly Craig placed two blue lights in her window during the holiday season. One candle was for her son-in-law, a Philadelphia police officer who was killed in the line of duty. The other was for her daughter who was killed in a car crash. Project Blue Light has grown throughout the nation and the world.

At Tuesday's ceremony Harrisburg Mayor Julie Burke-Bowen, the originator of Project Blue Light in this area, will provide the opening and closing remarks.
