Rounds officially launches his U.S. Senate campaign

Posted: Updated:

A familiar face in South Dakota is ready to get back into politics.

Former governor Mike Rounds has announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination for the U-S Senate seat currently held by Tim Johnson.

Rounds officially jumped into the race this morning in Pierre.

"I want to help create a better United States for them." Saying he wants to make a better future for his grandchildren, Mike Rounds officially became a candidate for United States Senate. "We have to make the right decisions." And he says those right decisions need to be made quickly by people who are willing to work together and not hold the nation hostage to a continuing debate over political ideology.
But Rounds cautions, compromise doesn't mean selling out...a point he underlined repeatedly. "When it comes to the defense of our country and protecting our border...there will be no compromise. We must restore federal fiscal responsibility. On this there will be no compromise. We will defend our religious freedoms from the intrusion of bureaucrats or elected officials. On this there can be no compromise."

Several years ago here in Pierre while Rounds was still governor, KSFY news anchor Brian Allen asked Rounds what he thought his political future would hold. Specifically if he ever had any interest in going to Washington. He unequivocally said no. So what changed.?

"I think I can make a difference. And I think as one person starts, other people will join. I believe there are people in Washington DC right now who feel just like I do. They simply have to have enough of us to make a difference...Republicans and Democrats alike."  Rounds believes one person can effect great change. He says he has a track record of doing that and it is a track record he is putting on the line as he takes a step towards the nation's capitol.
