Maintaining good credit during the holiday season

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Mike Huether announced today that Sioux Falls has the highest average credit score in the country.  That's according to Experian's 2012 State of Credit Report.

This year, the average credit score in Sioux Falls is 784, followed by Dallas at 727.  Waco, Texas ranked third at 715.

According to Huether, the report proves that South Dakotans tend to be money-wise and conservative with their resources.  But spending around the holidays can easily get out of hand.

KSFY News spoke with one credit counseling expert who says the first thing everyone needs to do is pay bills on time.  When you pay those bills, make sure you can at least make that minimum payment.  And think long-term - ask yourself how the purchases over the next few weeks will affect your overall credit next year.

"We always talk to people about planning ahead of time and sticking to an agenda. This is how much I'm going to spend this weekend, next weekend, even that trip to the mall. Someone might come in and say 'hey Marley, I don't have a plan but I've been shopping a lot.' It's never too late to start," Marley Prunty-Lara said.
