With Thanksgiving in the books many Americans are now looking for a way to quickly shed those turkey day pounds.
"The trends and fad diets right now is quick, easy and convenient food, people are looking for something simple and they want that absolute direction so that's something that really appeals to people also the "lose this much weight in ten days" any good marketing scheme along those lines makes people excited, it doesn't seem like it's a lot of work and they want to take advantage of that." Said Avera Dietitian Nikki Ver Steeg.
Ver Steeg says diets like juicing and cleanses are a big draw for people because the perception is that they are a healthy way to drop the pounds quickly. But losing the weight isn't always the hardest part; its maintaining the weight loss. Ver Steeg says that fad diets promising a quick fix should be avoid because they really aren't sustainable and unfortunately there's still no magic pill.
"It's nothing that's easy, you have to educate yourself and gradually learn these things and not expect changes overnight." Said Ver Steeg.
In order to start physical change, there has to be a lifestyle change. Right now, many people are doing the Paleo diet which essentially is not eating anything with preservatives. But in order for it to work and keep working, it has to become a lifestyle. That concept behind the Paleo diet can and should be used every time you go to the grocery store.
"When you're looking for something that is a healthful way of living you have to educate yourself so you know what foods to pick when you come into a store and be able to take those and incorporate them into you're normal routine. That's most of the time, 80%-90% of the time if we can get you to eat and focus on whole foods that's what we're shooting for." Said Ver Steeg.
The other percentage are the foods to reward yourself with because if you cut them off completely they're going to be the only things you'll think about.
When you decide to make the healthy lifestyle change, make sure you have others helping you. Whether it's a dietitian like Nikki or a friend or spouse, those people are often times what makes or breaks a diet.
"Leaning on people for support is huge, a lot of times with the fad diets it's a quick easy fix and some are getting weight off people however that transitioning back to real food is when you need assistance so you don't fall back into regular habits." Said Ver Steeg.
Diets can be a challenge, but they don't have to be impossible, you just have to be willing to make the change. And if you start now, when January rolls around you'll be ahead of the game and can find something else to resolve about.
