Nearly three months ago, the Sioux Falls community was stunned when a domestic dispute led to a fatal shooting and an innocent victim killed.
Amanda Connors, 24, was gunned down outside a Sioux Falls Cost Cutters, on W. 41st Street, as she was trying to protect her co-workers. Monday, those co-workers held a Cut-A-Thon, a benefit, in her honor.
100% of the proceeds will help create a scholarship to be created in Amanda Connors name for the Stewart School of Cosmetology.
"Wonderful way to honor her... I'm trying to do my part in a small way," customer Kasey Abbott said.
It's a bittersweet day for patrons and staff of Cost Cutters as they honor and remember their former manager Amanda Connors while they happily give back in her name.
"She was well-liked by everyone, no one didn't like her, the mood in the shop was up. Clients loved her, great at what she did, had a passion for hair, we really miss her smile," Cost Cutters General Manager Kaylee Spolum said.
A plaque sits on the wall with her picture as a symbol of a young woman so dedicated to the work she did, her customers and the staff she managed. While Amanda can't be replaced at Cost Cutters, the staff can do their best to help fund young students to succeed just as she did.
"I've driven by this place many times, knew about the story, it was a no brainer to come over here," Abbot said.
"It's great because we can do it every year, something we can do next year to keep her memory going. We'll never forget her but in some way can honor her," Spolum said.
Friends and many strangers filled the chairs, getting a haircut for a very worthy cause.
"We're a very supportive community. Whether it's the United Way, or something like this, Sioux Falls comes out in a big way and just the way we do things in this town, I'm not surprised at all," Abbott said.
As of 4:00 p.m., Monday, the Cut-A-Thon raised well over their goal with more than $3,000 for the scholarship.
