Boys High School Basketball
1 – Pierre (18-8), 25
2 – SF Roosevelt (13-13), 20

Notes – Pierre, which was fourth a year ago, is the top-ranked squad in AA and will be led by all-state performers Lane Severyn and Zach Hansen. Second-ranked SF Roosevelt will be led by Nate Cole and Tyler Howard while Sioux Falls O'Gorman is third after winning a third straight title. The Knights have won five of the last seven titles but must replace most of its starting lineup. Brandon Valley lost all-state guard Ben Schultz but has several talented players back including Jacob Adams. SF Washington, like O'Gorman, has to replace some talented players but feature height and speed.

Notes – The Class A preseason rankings include several of the teams that made the state tournament a year ago. Dell Rapids (21-5), led by all-state players Cole Langer and Bryce Koch, is top-ranked and finished third at the 2012 tourney. #2 Clark/Willow Lake will feature the dynamic guard Skyler Flatten, and finished sixth a year ago. #3 Dakota Valley (22-4) was second a year ago and welcome back a talented guard duo in Blake and Brody Van Ginkel among others. Deuel is ranked fourth and will feature a veteran unit led by Lincoln Swenson. Chamberlain, ranked #5, was seventh a year ago and returns Gage Basting, among others. Elk Point-Jefferson, which features all-state guard Brock Zeller, and Aberdeen Roncalli, led by Kory Schwan and Kendal Deutsch, also received votes.

Notes –The defending champions White River, which cruised through the 2011-12 season with a 25-1 record, top the preseason B rankings. Eldon Marshall's team, which features all-state performers Wyatt Krogman and Nic Waln, were the unanimous choice with five first place votes. White River has been to five straight State B Tournaments, earning three titles. Canistota, which lost in the regions a year ago in a 19-5 season, were ranked second and return all-state guard Alex Robertson. Kimball-White Lake, which features the talented Jesse Taylor, is ranked #3 while Viborg-Hurley, 23-3 a year ago and second at the State B, is ranked fourth. James Valley Christian, led by first-team all-state guard Adam Hofer, went 17-5 last year and come in at #5 in the preseason poll.

Notes – The defending champions Mitchell, led by all-state standouts Kerri Young and Macy Miller, is the unanimous choice as the #1 team heading into the 2012-13 season. Sioux Falls Washington, which finished second to Mitchell a year ago, has one of the state's top point guards in Ellie Benson and a standout forward in Emma Hanson. Sioux Falls Lincoln returns a talented duo as well as in Darby Hugunin and Cera Ledbetter, a talented guard-post tandem. Aberdeen Central, 16-8 a year ago, is ranked fourth and returns a solid group led by Brynn Flakus and Sami Knecht. Sioux Falls Roosevelt, 18-8 and third in the 2012 state tourney, have a solid group back led by Lauren Kunz and Tagyn Larson.

Notes – The top two teams in the preseason rankings participated in the Class A tournament a year ago. Clark/Willow Lake, featuring all-state Chynna Stevens, is the top choice. #2 Parkston returns several starters from its runner-up squad a year ago, including Logan Wagner and Erica Herrold. Sioux Falls Christian (15-8), led by Hayley McCarron; Harrisburg (14-9), which returns Hailey Halling and Brittany Blakney; and Aberdeen Roncalli (17-5) with Mollee Karst; were tapped in the third through fifth spots in the preseason poll.

Notes – Two-time defending champion Summit, led by Logan and Presley O'Farrell, is the unanimous choice for the top spot in Class B. Summit has won three of the past four titles and appeared in four straight state title games. Ranked #2 is Sanborn Central/Woonsocket, which was fourth a year ago in the B tourney, and return everyone including third-team all-state performer Shelby Selland. DeSmet, 16-6 a year ago, have Amanda Poppen back to lead a veteran unit that is ranked #3. Centerville, which was ranked most of 2011-12 but lost a high-scoring game in the districts, has one of the state's top talents in Kieran O'Malley (over 1,800 career points) and are picked #4. Herreid/Selby, led by 3rd-team all-state performer Shauni Schwartz, finished 18-4 a year ago and was ranked #5 in the preseason poll. Lemmon and Warner also received support in the rankings.
