The Huron City Council passed the city's first distracted driving ordinance Monday night. The vote was unanimous - 4-0.
The new law will make texting behind the wheel a primary offense. That means a Huron Police Officer will be able to pull someone over if they are seen texting while operating a vehicle. The penalty will be $100 plus court costs.
Also included in the ordinance is a ban on all behind-the-wheel cell phone use for people with learner's permits, restricted driver's licenses and bus drivers with children onboard.
The law will apply within Huron city limits. Huron Public Safety Commissioner Mark Robish says the ordinance will go into effect after 20 days.
