IOWA CITY, Iowa—Aaron White's 21 points led four Iowa players in double figures as the Hawkeyes beat South Dakota 87-63 Tuesday night from Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It was the first meeting between the two programs since the 1964-65 season.
Roy Devyn Marble scored 14 points, Mike Gesell had 12 and Adam Woodbury had 10 for the Hawks (7-2), which used a 50-31 edge on the boards to put away their under-sized opponent. Iowa used 20 offensive rebounds to net 24 second-chance points.
Trevor Gruis had 16 points and Casey Kasperbauer added 14 for the Coyotes (4-5), which fell to 0-11 all-time against Iowa. Kasperbauer made four of South Dakota's nine three-pointers. Iowa was 2-of-16 from behind the arc, including an 0-for-7 effort in the first half.
South Dakota took its first and only lead at 25-24 following a Karim Rowson free throw with just under eight minutes to go in the first half. Gesell scored eight points during a 21-7 Iowa run to close the first half and the Hawks took a 45-32 lead into the break.
The Coyotes got within 10 following Kasperbauer's third trey of the game early in the second half. A 12-3 Iowa run began with back-to-back hoops by Anthony Clemmons and the Hawks maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
