It's been a challenging two months for the family of trooper Andrew Steen but Wednesday they were feeling good.
The trooper had successful surgery on his skull early Wednesday morning.
His father tells us his son came out of surgery and recovery Wednesday afternoon and is doing well.
His father says he has his son back.
The family posted the good news on his Facebook and Caringbridge pages.
KSFY News sat down with trooper Steen's father Dan. He told us Wednesday was a special day for him, his son, and the entire family.
"It's a day that we'll remember. Not near as much as they day of the incident but it's just part of the steps towards total healing," Dan Steen said.
Trooper Steen's father said the day of the incident which injured his son is also one to remember for the family.
"It strengthened our ties with each other. Even stronger if that was possible. there will never be a day that if I'm with my child or my wife that I won't give them a hug and tell them I love them. same with my friends and they people that have been so good to us," Dan Steen said.
trooper Steen's recovery is going well but not without complications
"He has a little hearing problem and his smell is absent. but there are things that we keep praying to god that they come back," Dan Steen said.
Steen says the family is already celebrating the Christmas season, but is not ready to decorate just yet.
"We're going to wait for him to get home and he's going to get home for Christmas. That's our goal. That's his goal," Dan Steen said.
As for the trooper's future goals...
"If his captain would give him the ok, he'd get in the car today and he'd be out on the highway doing what he knows best what to do," Dan Steen said.
Dan Steen tells us his son Andrew is very grateful for the support the community has given him.
And trooper Steen is already giving back, from his hospital bed.
His dad told us the trooper heard about a young officer in Sioux Falls with a child of great needs.
A benefit was held for the officer and Steen decided he had to donate to help out.
