Concerns rise along highway after fatal accident near Baltic

Posted: Updated:

A crash turned deadly at an intersection near Baltic along County Highway 115.

With wither now setting in, many drivers worry it could easily happen again. The accident happened near the intersection of 254th Street and 475th Avenue near Baltic. The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office says David Rohan, 50, ran a stop sign, was hit by a pick-up and died at the scene.

This is the time of year when people hit the roads, especially County Highway 115 as they head in and out of Sioux Falls.

Drivers say they've always had a little concern on the highway especially around communties like Renner, Baltic and Dell Rapids.

Concerns include drivers going too fast, not paying attention or not giving each other enough room.

"Depends on the time of day you travel. if you're an early person, it's not as bad. But if you're during rush hour. Everyone drives faster, not leaving 5 minutes earlier from home," driver Jim Leslie said.

"Last night, an individual died, he was the father of 5 kids with a wife, it's a significant impact on that family and others involved. The reality of those main roads is they get very busy, during rush hour, that's when that happened last night, busy highways and highway speed highways. Drivers on those roads need to be alert with the volume of traffic there is because there's a lot," Sheriff Mike Milstead said.
