Violent crime rate soars in Rapid City, 5th largest increase in the nation

Rapid City has made a list it more than likely does not want to be on. The city's violent crime rate is growing at the fifth largest rate in the United States between 2006 and 2011.

A ranking from 24/7WallSt.com gave Rapid City the fifth spot because over the past five years the city's violent crime rate increased 50.5 percent. According to 24/7 Wall St., in 2006 Rapid City had 269.5 violent crimes per 100,000 people. In 2011 the city had 405.7 crimes per 100,000.

The study also noted the aggravated assault rate in Rapid City increased by more than 64 percent, while the robbery rate increased by 42 percent. Rapid City's property crime rate increased 19 percent, which includes the second-largest increase in the motor vehicle theft rate and the sixth-largest increase in the larceny rate.

Across the country, larceny rates decreased by 10.7%, while the motor vehicle theft rate decreased by 42.6%.
