Sioux Falls man, stepson arrested for waving gun at couple
A Sioux Falls man and his stepson spent some time behind bars for waving and pointing a gun at other cars while they were driving around.
The incident was reported as a weapons violation at 12:52 pm Tuesday near the corner of East River Blvd. and East 14th Street.
Lt. Blaine Larsen, Sioux Falls Police, said plain-clothed detectives were driving behind the boy and the step dad, who were in a blue Dodge Dakota. Larsen said the detectives noticed the passenger window being rolled down and a gun being pointed at another vehicle. The detectives activated their emergency lights and sirens and the man pulled over to the side of the road.
Detectives said in the pickup they could see the but of a handgun in the center console. Lt. Larsen said the gun was a 9 mm Ruger and the detectives also found two 9 mm magazines which contained 11 rounds each. Detectives said the gun was not loaded at the time.
The officers were able to flag down the vehicle at which the gun was allegedly pointed to interview the victims. The victims in the car were a couple in their 20s, a 28-year-old male and 21-year-old female, who had their 2-year-old child in the back seat.
Lt. Larsen said the victims said the gun was pointed at them "gangster style."
The juvenile was taken to the Minnehaha County Juvenile Detention Center, and is charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault, Commission of a Felony with a Firearm, and Possession of a Pistol by a Minor.
Nathaniel Bensand, 30, was driving the pickup. Bensand told officers all he and his stepson were doing was horsing around.
Bensand is charged with Aggravated Assault, Commit or Attempt to Commit Felony with a Firearm, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor and Open Container because an open bottle of rum was found on the floor behind the passenger's seat.
