Ending domestic violence with resources from Children's Inn

Posted: Updated:

It is estimated that around 960,000 domestic violence incidents happen each year across the country.

Here in the Sioux Empire, as law enforcement wraps up a 2012 with several incidents stemming from domestic violence, some even fatal, KSFY News looks into the resources in Sioux Falls to keep numbers down.

"Parenting is not easy. It takes a lot of patience and support to manage children of all ages. When you have children that are more challenged, or more stress in your family, remove yourself from the situation," Operations Director Amy Carter said.

Carter said one of the biggest factors at the root of domestic violence is stress. When small children are around, it can get tough.

"As long as the child is safe, you can step away from the situation and address what is going on after you, yourself, can calm down," Carter said.

Carter says child abuse numbers are high. There are a number of warning signs every adult can watch for from changes in behavior, at home or school, to unexplained injuries.

"Violence continues in our community but the more we can raise awareness about it and get involved and realize that it is everyone's business. sometimes people are afraid to get involved and become that neighbor who makes a call, but we need to do that to protect these families," she said.

There are a number of resources for those affected by domestic violence, abuse or neglect. You can find the Children's Inn web site at the top-left corner of this web page.

If you are in danger, call 911, or Children's Inn 1-888-378-7398.

Children's Inn is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1977 that provides 24 hour, free services for women, children and men who are victims of family violence, elder abuse, child abuse, neglect, or sexual assault.
