The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that left one Minnehaha County Sheriff Deputy injured and a suspect in custody.
It happened just after 2:00 a.m., Sunday morning, near the intersection of Rice Street and Six Mile Road. A Minnehaha County Dodge Charger Patrol Car was driven by Deputy in field training Derek Gulbrandson with his passenger, Field Training Officer Deputy Phillip Leidholt.
Their Dodge Charger Patrol Car was southbound on Six Mile Road when another driver was swerving in the southbound lane while traveling northbound. While the deputies attempted to move out of the way, they were unable to avoid the accident. The driver of the other car, Trevor Allen Buckholtz, and his passenger, crashed into the driver's side of the patrol car, forcing it off the road into the ditch. Both were towed from the scene.
Deputy Gulbrandson received minor injuries to his left knee and Deputy Leidholt was not injured. Buckholtz and his passenger were transported to a Sioux Falls hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Buckholtz was charged with Possession of drug paraphernalia and Marijuana, Ingestion of marijuana, reckless driving, DUI Drugs, no driver's license and no seatbelt.
