AAA offers service to keep New Year's Eve drivers safe

Posted: Updated:

The clock is winding down on 2012 and on this New Year's Eve, Sioux Falls police are beefing up patrols to keep an eye on drunk drivers.

If you drink too much tonight, you shouldn't drive, however, there is a safe solution to avoid ringing in the new year behind bars.

Bobby Schoenfelder said "DUI's, jail, losing licenses, lot's of fines... it's just a big hassle that is not worth it."

Schoenfelder said it's not worth taking a chance on driving tonight if you've been drinking.

"I've had a lot of friends get into trouble and I haven't. it's just not something I want to deal with. it's the smartest thing to do I think," Schoenfelder said.

Schoenfelder hasn't figured out his new year's eve plans yet but knows there's one thing he will be doing tonight.

"Taking a cab home, no matter where I go, no matter whatever I end up doing tonight, I'll definitely be 'cabbing' it tonight. it's just not worth drinking and driving. it's just not smart," Schoenfelder said.

And if you don't want to pay for a cab, AAA offers the 'Tipsy Tow' service to get you and your car home safely.

Will Wendell, A+ Towing, said "AAA does it for free, so it doesn't cost anything. You don't even have to be a AAA member so it's one of the few times every year that you can get towed for free and get home safe."

Wendell said even if you had to pay, it's still a good deal.

"The 'Tipsy Tow's' are great, but even if you have to pay a tow truck to take you home,.. we charge $53 dollars anywhere here in town, so it's still a lot cheaper than a DUI," Wendell said.@

Whether you use 'Tipsy Tow' or use a cab, Schoenfelder said it's good to have a plan in place.

"I'd encourage anybody to do it. it's not worth getting a dui or hurting somebody. obviously, if you hurt somebody you'll get in trouble but it's just not worth the risk," Schoenfelder said.

AAA's 'Tipsy Tow' service is available for anyone who needs it, even if you're not a member.

Just call 800-222-4357 to request a ride.

They will offer free tows in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Mitchell and Yankton.
