Davison County Correctional Officer hospitalized after assault

Posted: Updated:

A Davidson County correctional officer has been hospitalized.

Correctional officer, James Dietz, was doing his rounds shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday night when he discovered evidence of "fishing". "Fishing" is known in the correctional system as when a cellmate attaches objects or goods to dental floss and tosses it across to another cellmate, creating an easy way for inmates to exchange goods while locked down in their cells.

Dietz discovered the dental floss attached to the cell mates door and entered the cell to confront the inmate. The inmate, who had been imprisoned for burglary and reckless burning, violently attacked the officer, requiring two other officers to assist. The assisting officers, one wielding a taser, gained control over the inmate and moved him into another cell.

Dietz was transported to Avera Queen of Peace and is being treated with multiple facial fractures.

According to Don Radel, Jail Administrator, there hasn't been an intentional assault on an officer in possibly 10 years.

The incident is still under investigation.
