Update: Suspect in fiery Sioux Falls crash was drinking

Posted: Updated:

Sioux Falls police say the suspect in a fiery crash early Sunday morning was drinking, but charges have not been filed.

Sioux Falls Police responded to Cook Road and South Cliff Avenue just after 1:30 a.m., Sunday, for an injury accident. Two SUVs, going the opposite direction on Cliff, had collided while one driver was taking a left turn. One SUV was pushed into an electric power pole.

Metro was advised one of the cars was on fire. Police arrived to find two Ford Explorers that had crashed, one of them resting alongside the power pole, fully engulfed in flames. The power pole caught fire, as well.

Police say the female driver was lying down away from the SUV with burns on her arms and stomach.

Police say the driver of the second SUV, close to the flames, feared it would catch fire. The driver, still behind the wheel, was removed from the car and sustained a broken pelvis, femur and ankle in the crash.

Both were taken to Avera McKennan with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
