Update: Huron schools on lockdown during search for escaped prisoner

Posted: Updated:

The Beadle County Sheriff's Department wants you to be on alert, after a prisoner escaped from the jail. He is considered armed and dangerous.

It happened about 12:30 Tuesday morning in Huron. The jail administrator Skip Mcwethy told us that Charles Leroy Beeney held a jailer hostage with some sort of makeshift weapon, and forced him to open up the doors. The staff saw him shortly after escaping just north of the jail, but then lost sight of him. They are currently searching for him. The jailer that was held hostage is okay and no one else was hurt during the escape.

Beeney is a 45-year-old white male. He is 5'11" and 160 pounds. He has blue eyes and shoulder length brown hair. He is originally from Kansas and was arrested for aggravated eluding.

Beadle County was holding him for Jerauld County, and he had been at the jail since December 3rd.

If you live in the Huron area, the police are asking that you lock your doors. Huron schools are on lockdown status as a precaution. And if you see Beeney, do not approach him and call law enforcement immediately.
