The man who escaped from the Beadle County Jail by holding a guard hostage was sentenced to the state penitentiary but on different charges.

Charles Beeney, escaped from the Beadle County Jail at about 12:30am Tuesday morning. During the morning hours, a 1991 Ford 250 pickup was reported stolen at a farmhouse, which authorities believed Beeney stole.

Beeney was spotted at Hilltop Laundromat at 1101 South Cleveland Avenue in Sioux Falls. Beeney and only one other person were in the business when the news came on television. Police said the person in business saw the suspect on the news, recognized Beeney and called police.

The caller was also able to provide a license plate number of the stolen vehicle Beeney was driving.

Beeney was found inside that vehicle at East 12th Street in Sioux Falls. He was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

In court on Wednesday, Beeney was sentenced to two years in the South Dakota State Penitentiary for aggravated eluding, 34 of those days were suspended for time served. The charges stem from a December 2012 incident in which Beeney led police on a five-county chase that ended in a crash near Alpena.
