We spoke with Registered Dietitian and Certified Wellness Coach from the Avera Heart Hospital, Nikki Ver Steeg. She explains you need to stay positive in the New Year to stick to your weight loss resolution.
Nikki Ver Steeg says if you want to lose weight you need to change the way you look at food. She says you need to take time to enjoy food. She says all to often we are eating on the go and not really thinking about what we are putting in our bodies.
The first thing Ver Steeg says we should work into our new diet is more fruits and vegetables. She says this doesn't need to be dull and boring. She suggests trying some vegetables you've never had before and instead of just eating them plain try cooking them with a little olive oil and garlic.
When it comes to working in more fresh fruit Ver Steeg says trying fresh or frozen berries. You could work those into a smoothie, on top of whole wheat pancakes or waffles, in oatmeal, or adding them to non-fat yogurt.
For healthy snacking Ver Steeg recommends almonds. Their high protein count will help keep you fuller longer. If you really have a need for something sweet she recommends Dove dark chocolate. She says they come packaged in a good portion size and nibbling on one should help curb that sweet tooth.
Overall Ver Steeg says stay away from fad diets. She says no one will be able to eat bland chicken, steamed vegetables, and brown rice for every single meal for the rest of their life. Instead she says change how you think, find healthy recipes, and work in healthy food into your New Year's resolution.
