A community in Quebec is calling for outside help to free about a dozen killer whales that are trapped under a large stretch of sea ice. Locals say the mammals have gathered around a hole in the ice to get oxygen.
2. Flu prompts Boston public health emergency
An early flu season has prompted a public health emergency in Boston, where 700 people have been diagnosed with the virus. Four Boston residents - all elderly - have died from the flu. At this time last year, the city had only seen 70 cases of influenza.

4. Family of murder victim says alcohol is the root of this tragedy
A Sioux Falls family says alcohol is at the root of a tragedy. Right now 22-year-old Robert Bass is in custody and is facing charges including murder in the second degree. Sioux Falls police say Bass beat 50-year-old Chris Conde-Vargas with a baseball bat.
5. Drug courts keep drug abusers out of prison
It's day two of South Dakota's 2013 legislative session and today, the state supreme court's chief justice delivered his state of the judiciary speech. Justice David Gilbertson said during his decades working in the criminal justice system, he has noticed a pattern when it comes to repeat offenders.
