Fiscal Cliff issues may mean delay for some tax filers

Posted: Updated:

For those of us who don't like waiting until April to file our taxes, the IRS will start taking some of our income tax returns at the end of the month.

Congress averted the fiscal cliff but some side effects remain.

The IRS had to delay tax filing until it knew what changes in tax law might be caused by the fiscal cliff.

Tax professional Chuck Nelson says don't blame the IRS for the delay -- blame Congress. "The IRS is working very hard to get their software updated. It's not only the IRS but it's the tax software companies that need to update their software. Because of this late legislation being passed on January first, it's pushed everybody back on what the tax laws are going to be and that's the whole cause of the delay. "

Most taxpayers will be able to file starting January 30th.

But if you're in business -- own rental property -- or purchased large machinery -- you'll have to wait a little longer.
