Driver killed in late night crash in Sioux Falls

Posted: Updated:

Sioux Falls Police say alcohol and speed were factors in a late night crash that left one person dead and four people in the hospital.

On Thursday night around 10:30 Sioux Falls Police, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, and Rural Metro Ambulance were called to Oak Street and Holly Avenue for a car accident. They were told a car had hit a tree in the front yard of someone's home. When officers got on the scene they found a silver 2005 Mercury Montego with five people inside the car.

Sioux Falls Police say two of the people inside the car had critical, life threatening injuries and the other three had serious injuries. All five people inside the car were taken to both Sanford and Avera McKennan Hospitals for emergency treatment. The driver died shortly after arriving at the hospital from injuries received in the crash. The other passengers are still in the hospital with injuries ranging from serious to critical.

Sioux Falls Police say an initial investigation shows that both speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. No one inside the car was wearing a seatbelt. This accident remains under investigation.
