Urban Indian Health Clinic in Sioux Falls offers flu shot for food

Posted: Updated:

With health officials claiming this year's flu outbreak as the worse in a decade, one clinic is offering you the chance to immunize at the cost of food.

41 states have confirmed cases of the flu. South Dakota has confirmed 469 cases and nine deaths. Minnesota has been highlighted national for more than 1,100 confirmed cases and 23 flu-related deaths. Also, in Central Iowa hospitals are asking people with minor illnesses to avoid emergency rooms because of an influx of flu-related cases.

The South Dakota Urban Indian Health Clinic in Sioux Falls is offering free flu shots in exchange for three non-perishable food items. The clinic is providing free flu shots for anyone 4 years old and older. All the food donated is given to the Sioux Falls Food Pantry. The shot is also being offered from now until the end of June.

You can make an appointment by calling 339-0420 or stop by the office at 711 North Lake Avenue.

Health experts urge vaccinations for everyone six months old and older. Doctors say it takes about two weeks for the shot to take full effect, but the shot is not a catch all for all strains of flu. Doctors also say you cannot get the flu from the flu shot.
