Dozens participate in Civil Air Patrol training

Posted: Updated:

It was an all-day Search and Rescue exercise for cadets and leaders with the Civil Air Patrol in Sioux Falls.

Cadets of the Civil Air Patrol were practicing their ground mission by looking for practice beacons while others remained at the Civil Air Patrol base directing the missions.

These same beacons can be found in real-life situations when airplanes crash or have bumpy landings.

About 45 people from Sioux Falls and Brookings took part locally, and another 35 at a similar training exercise in Rapid City.

After six years on the patrol, one cadet described her years of involvement.

"It's one of those programs where you become part of something that's larger than yourself, and that's something that's so rare in our society," Cadet Capt. Elizabeth Foy said.

She says the Civil Air Patrol is great for youth, teaching leadership and responsibility.
