Pheasants Bolster Bullpen

Posted: Updated:

SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Pheasants continued stockpiling their 2013 bullpen arsenal by signing right-handed reliever Kirk Clark on Monday.

Clark, 24, brings three years pro experience to the Pheasants and 57 career saves. All but one came while pitching in the Houston Astros system, which signed him as an undrafted free agent from Creighton University in 2009.

After going 4-4 with a 5.36 ERA and eight saves with the high-A Lancaster Jethawks in 2012, Clark joined the Schaumburg Boomers of the independent Frontier League. He thoroughly dominated in 10 late-season appearances, posting a perfect 0.00 ERA with one save and four strikeouts.

Pheasants manager Steve Shirley said he expects Clark to compete this spring for a late-inning bullpen role in key game situations.

Clark is 14-11 for his career with a 4.80 ERA and 155 strikeouts in 176 1/3 innings pitched.

The Pheasants' spring training will be a reunion for Clark and fellow Pheasants reliever and local product Jack Van Leur, a former college teammate at Creighton. Clark also pitched for Iowa Wesleyan Community College and hails from Moline, Ill.

The Sioux Falls Pheasants begin their 21st season on May 16, 2013, and their home opener is May 17 against the Sioux City Explorers. Information about season tickets and advertising with the Sioux Falls Pheasants is available by calling (605) 336-6060 or visiting www.sfpheasants.com.
