Rep. Noem defends vote against Sandy Aid

Posted: Updated:

Republican Representative Kristi Noem is defending her vote against the recent Sandy Aid bill after South Dakota's Democratic Party Chair called her out on it.

Tuesday night, the US House of Representatives passed a bill providing $50.7 billion in relief for victims of Superstorm Sandy.

South Dakota Democratic Party Chair Ben Nesselhuf said Noem callously rejected the disaster relief despite relying on relief funds during the 2011 flood and drought that hurt South Dakota farmers.

Noem told KSFY News through an email that she supported providing the $17 billion in emergency funding that was recommended by the House Appropriations Committee.

However, she said she joined the majority of her Republican colleagues in not supporting final passage of the measure after an amendment was adopted that nearly tripled its cost.
