Preparing for survival in the workplace in the face of danger

Posted: Updated:

People on both sides of the gun control debate may disagree on whether the president's executive orders will make us safer.

And in the wake of recent mass shootings, some people are taking gun safety into their own hands.

We've seen mass shootings at schools, public places such as a mall or movie theater , and the workplace.

One local business offers classes so you can learn how to create a self-defense plan, if any of us faced a similar situation.

While some may buy a gun for protection, LMC Consulting in Humboldt offers a workplace safety training class.

Instructors teach people how to be the first line of defense should they face a shooter in the workplace.

Ladd McCluskey says a shooter can strike at any time so preparation is key, not only for reducing our risk to dangerous situations but for our survival.

"We really need to look inside out businesses, out churches, out schools and figure out what can be done before these incidences occur. We need to try to be proactive so we're fixing the problem before it happens," McCluskey said.

McCluskey advised to make your front desk staff part of the security team.

They may be the first to see trouble coming.

McCluskey said being able to respond to a incident requires training, practice, and the empowerment to act.
