SD governor believes current state gun laws good

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard says he believes the state's current gun laws are good and he sees no need to change them.

Daugaard says he supports the state law that allows people to carry concealed weapons if they have permits. He says he opposes allowing people to carry concealed guns without permits because they could accidentally get into trouble if they carry a concealed handgun in another state without a permit.

The Republican governor also says any plan to improve school safety, such as letting teachers or administrators have guns in schools, should be developed by local school officials and law enforcement agencies. He says law officers believe school entrances should be made more secure.

Daugaard believes Congress is so divided it will not approve any gun control measures.
