A Wisconsin man is dead after the semi-trailer he was riding in rolled along Interstate 90 near Plankinton.
Maurice Hampton, 36, of Milwaukee, was riding westbound on Interstate 90 at approximately 11:36 pm Sunday. Paul Mathews, 58 of Dallas, N.C. was driving the semi-trailer.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, strong wind pushed the vehicle to the shoulder on the median side of the interstate. Mathews tried to correct and the vehicle spun into the north ditch and rolled, coming to rest on its top.
Mathews was wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries. Hampton was in the sleeper bunk and was thrown out the back. Hampton died at the scene.
The semi hit an electrical power pole and power lines fell onto the driving lanes. A portion of the interstate was closed and power was out for a while for several area communities.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Aurora County Sheriff's Office, Plankinton Fire and Ambulance and South Dakota Department of Transportation assisted.
