Madison High School senior wrestler Michael McComish gets ready for a much-anticipated match up at the Madison Square Garden, Friday night, but never would have thought what would eventually happen next.
"I walked over to the center, set, and the next thing I know the lights are on top of me. It's bright. I couldn't stand up, it was awkward. I fell back down and got some cuts on my knees," Michael McComish said.
Those moments are a vivid memory now for McComish with the help of a popular YouTube video gone viral.
"It was really strange. After a couple of seconds, I kind of realized that's what it was. At first, I said to myself 'what just hit me?' it was really bright. I noticed all the glass. I was like 'okay, this isn't good'," McComish said.
And it wasn't good, after nearly 80 pounds of heavy aluminum spotlights came crashing down.
"When I was under the light trying to stand up, I heard screams like girls in movies, I heard those," he said.
His injuries are minimal. All he has to show for it are a handful of stitches: a few on his forehead and a few on the back of his head.
"If I would have been standing or if the mat wouldn't have been in the right place, it would have done serious damage," McComish said.
McComish says he's always loved wrestling and, if he had to chose, he wouldn't want to get hurt any other way.
"Something I've heard from a lot of people, they say, 'in Madison Square Garden, everyone gets to wrestle under the lights', but I'm the only one who's truly gotten to wrestle under the lights."
The family does not plan to file suit against the district.
The Madison High School official released a statement saying the accident was a scary moment for everyone and the school is thankful to report the student is recovered and back at school.
On a final note, McComish lost the match that night due to 'injury default' but his opponent, showing good sportsmanship, wanted him to have the winner's medal. He gave it to Madison's head coach who then passed it along to McComish.
