Extreme temperatures blamed for flooding in USD Coyote Village

Posted: Updated:

Extreme temperatures are blamed for a broken water pipe that flooded the first floor of Coyote Village on the campus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

A water pipe burst Monday night, displacing approximately 500 residents living in the Coyote Village dormitory. A frozen water pipe ruptured near a first floor maintenance room, according to the University.

Parts of the main lobby, a hallway, a maintenance room, laundry room and three residential rooms were all flooded. Power has also been shut off in the building. Crews are working to get the residence hall re-opened as soon as possible.

The University arranged for 160 students to stay in hotel rooms Monday and Tuesday night. The rest are staying with friends.
