Attempt to avoid debt ceiling

The House passed a bill to avoid the debt ceiling Wednesday, at least for now.

The bill will allow the government to borrow enough money to avoid hitting its limit. The House passed the measure by a 285-144 vote, with a majority Republican vote.

The GOP is backing away from its previous demand that any increase in the government's borrowing cap be paired with an equal level in spending cuts.
