Hundreds turn out for McGovern estate sale in SD

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Hundreds of people have turned out for one last chance to connect to former U.S. Sen. George McGovern during a two-day estate sale at his home in South Dakota.

McGovern, a three-time presidential hopeful, died in October at age 90. Now many of his possessions are up for sale at his home in Sioux Falls.

Estate sale organizer Deb Sorensen says people started lining up outside the home several hours before the sale opened at 9 a.m.

One person, Matt Arntz, drove all the way from Dayton, Ohio, for the sale. Arntz is a public defender who worked on McGovern's failed 1972 presidential campaign. He's working on a biography of McGovern and planned to buy several books that McGovern made notes in and personal photos.

"The word got out and he had a lot of fans that wanted to share his items. That's our goal, so far so good. It keeps up so we can get things into the hands of people who can appreciate it and can be happy with what they got," said Deb Sorensen.

The sale continues Sunday.
