Avera Race celebrates 25 years

Posted: Updated:

The course is slick with dew, people are shaking out their limbs, and the gun is set to sound.

"The feeling you get that morning. It's something you can't really describe," said Missy Keiper, Avera's Annual Giving Coordinator. "But, you just sense and feel it from the moment you walk on here with all of the people and the excitement taking place."

The excitement has been building for the last two decades. This year the Avera Race Against Breast Cancer will celebrate 25 years.

"Everybody wraps their arms around that number 25 because it's amazing," said Jackie Haggar-Tuschen, Avera's Fitness Center Director. "The community has supported this race against breast cancer, this effort for 25 years."

During that quarter of a century, the Race has raised more than $2.7 million for cancer support, fitness, nutrition, mammography services, and much more.

"It's easy. It's tangible. It's right here, and I think what's so appealing about it," said Haggar Tuschen.

Last year, the Race had a record 6,500 participants. More than 500 volunteers made it possible.

"There are so many people that are involved with this race. Kind of the goal that morning is we don't want people to realize that because that means the event went smoothly," said Keiper.

Coming down the home stretch, the runners and walkers know this day is bigger than them. 25 years of sweat, all in the name of the battle against breast cancer, has been worth it.

"This event is something people truly believe in."

The 25th annual Avera Race Against Breast Cancer is May 11 at the Avera Fitness Center. For information on how you can sign up, click on this link: http://www.averaracesiouxfalls.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=1036407
