HURON, S.D. (AP) - A bus chartered for the Sturgis High School girls basketball team burned in a Huron motel parking lot Saturday but no one was injured.
Huron First Assistant Fire Chief Howard Alter tells KOKK radio that emergency crews called to the Super 8 motel about 7:30 a.m. could see fire and black smoke.
Alter says the fire started in the coach bus' engine bay, but the cause is unknown.
The team's basketball gear was on the bus at the time of fire, but most of the girls' personal belongings were removed for the night. A replacement bus was being sent to pick up the team, which was making a weekend trip to play Mitchell and Huron.
The bus is owned by Sturgis-based Western Transportation Inc.
