Governor Dennis Daugaard is set to sign his criminal justice reform legislation Wednesday.
It has almost been a week since Senate Bill 70, the South Dakota Public Safety Improvement Act, was finally passed through the House. The bill swept through both chambers with little opposition.
The Public Safety Improvement Act aims to reduce the amount of prisoners in South Dakota's prison system and to reduce costs to the criminal justice system. Most notably, it looks to rehabilitate nonviolent offenders rather than incarcerating them.
Daugaard is scheduled to sign the measure during a short public ceremony in the Rotunda of the State Capitol at 1 pm Wednesday.
