South Dakota Department of Tourism raising the bar

Posted: Updated:

South Dakota is becoming a trendy place to tour. But, in President Barack Obama's first term, South Dakota wasn't on his travel map. That's why South Dakota Department of Tourism Secretary James Hagen sent him a letter: one electronic, the other standard.

"We thought what an amazing and wonderful opportunity for us to invite him to South Dakota to explore great faces and great places," said Hagen.

Those great faces are now in mascot form, and they've become quite popular. New York City is one of their favorite spots to meet people, particularly during the Macy's Parade week.

"We're incredibly honored to be invited back for another three years, and we can't think of a better venue where you literally can make an impression on 88 million people at one time," said Hagen.

This summer the mascots will be taking their show on the road, traveling to eleven key markets on a bus.

"It's important. We need to be out there in those key markets like our competitors around us telling their stories out there because we know advertising works," said Hagen. "It definitely draws visitors here."
