Three arrested on charges of meth at home near Augustana College

Posted: Updated:

Three people are behind bars, Thursday, and facing charges of meth and marijuana.

It happened at a rental home along the 2200 block of South Grange Avenue near 30th Street, across the street from the Augustana College campus.

The suspects arrested are: Heather Schmidt, 37, Nicholas Sherard, 24, and Jonathan Wallace, 18.

Police say it was thanks to a series of tips from the public, including neighbors, about some short-term traffic in and out of the home in question and other suspicious behavior.

The Sioux Falls Drug Task Force served a warrant, Wednesday, at the home. During their search, they found several objects needed for operating a meth lab and marijuana.

They say it was a one-pot method which is smaller than what we normally see in Sioux Falls, it's becoming more of a trend.

The three suspects were arrested for manufacturing a controlled substance, maintaining a place where drugs are kept, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Police say this kind of bust can happen anywhere, but it's a good reminder to the public to report any activity deemed suspicious.

"Most people, when they go somewhere to visit, they don't stay for just a couple of minutes to visit. when you have that, seeing different cars and people coming and going. People recognize it, find it odd and that's the kind of information we like to have," Officer Sam Clemens.

The Director of Campus Security at Augustana said activity has been high at the home along Grange Avenue since September of last year. His staff has been keeping a close eye on the rental home ever since.

Heather Schmidt along with the two other men made their first court appearance. The men, Sherard and Wallace had their hearings rescheduled after they were escorted out for unruly behavior.
